Mrs. Ridings' Second Grade
What Second Grade is learning in January:
We are wrapping up Chapter 5 on two-digit subtraction with regrouping. Chapter 6 will follow with 3-digit addition and subtraction. A helpful skill is number facts recognition. A way to increase this is by practicing flashcards at home.
We have begun cursive writing! We will begin with the vowels and then move onto consonants. If your child has a tablet or ipad at home, there are some fun free apps you can download to practice the letter formation at home.
Upcoming units concentrate on homophones, words with plural endings, hard and soft c/g sounds.
Moving forward through Chapter 3 on verbs.
We are continuing to learn about consonant diagraphs and mastering high frequency words before moving onto Unit 5.
Theme 3 will conclude this month. We have two more exciting stories to read and one reader's theater play to perform. The test will be the last week of January which focuses on author's purpose, fiction/nonfiction genres, punctuation review, and comprehension skills.
Second Grade will work in our Penance and Reconciliation workbooks this month. We will also be working with our seventh grade Religion Buddies to get ourselves ready to receive our first Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation in February.
BrrrRrrrRrr, it's cod! We will begin our Thematic Unit on Penguins. We will cover many different species and discuss their habitats, locations, food, size, and appearances.
Second Grade is working so hard on this next edition of our classroom newspaper. Our topic this time: How-To Articles. We still have free copies in the hallway outside our classroom to take that feature the November/December edition! Enjoy!
Who is excited for Second Grade?? I know I sure am!! For those of you who may be unfamiliar with me, my name is Mrs. Julie Ridings and I have been teaching for about 10 years, this will be my 9th year in a Catholic School setting. I have 7 years experience of teaching second grade and I love teaching with all my heart! I know many of our students from last year and feel comfortable with picking up right where they left off in from June to continue giving them a quality and faith based education. Wait until you see all the amazing things we are going to explore, learn, and experience together! As always I am a firm believer on positive reinforcement and try to run my classroom in an uplifting way to work towards goals. I also want you parents out there to know I am 100% open for communication on any thoughts, concerns or ideas you have. Please do not hesitate to private message me here on Parent Square or my email ( firstname.lastname@example.org ). Thank you for all you do and for allowing us to educate your child here at SJS!
Check Parent Square daily for homework assignments!
I would like to give the parents/guardians a brief explanation of the colored smiley face that is inside the homework agenda. The color of the smiley face will correspond to my behavior chart we use in class. This is a quick way for you to chart your child's daily behavior progress.

Two new book cases would be a great help to organize our classroom library. We have so many story books that vary in sizes so these shelves would work wonders for us! Thank you in advance if you find it in your heart to donate!
