Mrs. Ridings' Second Grade
What Second Grade is learning in February:
We are wrapping up Chapter 6 and will test on 3-digit addition and subtraction. A helpful skill is number facts recognition. A way to increase this is by practicing flashcards at home. Next we'll move onto Money and Time.
We will continue to learn the rest of our cursive consonants. If your child has a tablet or ipad at home, there are some fun free apps you can download to practice the letter formation at home.
Upcoming units words with plural endings, hard and soft c/g sounds, and sounds of ow.
The start of February will have the Chapter 3 test on verbs. The Chapter 4 skills are adjectives and pronouns.
Contractions and suffixes are the objectives for Unit 5.
Theme 4 begins this month with focuses on setting, following directions, and comprehension skills. Featured stories we will cover are: Mr. Putter and Tabby Write a Book, Annie's Gifts, and Ah, Music.
Second Grade will finish up our Penance and Reconciliation workbooks this month. We will also be working with our seventh grade Religion Buddies to get ourselves ready to receive our first Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation on February 15th.
Learning about American symbols are a lot of fun. We will even get online to watch a live-feed of an American Bald Eagle's nest!
Second Grade is preparing for our rough drafts for the March/April editions of our classroom newspaper The Scoop. The topic to look forward to: Descriptive Writing.
We still have available copies of the January/February editions outside our classroom and featured below.
Who is excited for Second Grade?? I know I sure am!! For those of you who may be unfamiliar with me, my name is Mrs. Julie Ridings and I have been teaching for about 10 years, this will be my 9th year in a Catholic School setting. I have 7 years experience of teaching second grade and I love teaching with all my heart! I know many of our students from last year and feel comfortable with picking up right where they left off in from June to continue giving them a quality and faith based education. Wait until you see all the amazing things we are going to explore, learn, and experience together! As always I am a firm believer on positive reinforcement and try to run my classroom in an uplifting way to work towards goals. I also want you parents out there to know I am 100% open for communication on any thoughts, concerns or ideas you have. Please do not hesitate to private message me here on Parent Square or my email ( firstname.lastname@example.org ). Thank you for all you do and for allowing us to educate your child here at SJS!
Check Parent Square daily for homework assignments!
I would like to give the parents/guardians a brief explanation of the colored smiley face that is inside the homework agenda. The color of the smiley face will correspond to my behavior chart we use in class. This is a quick way for you to chart your child's daily behavior progress.

Mrs. Ridings' Second Grade Wish List
Two new book cases would be a great help to organize our classroom library. We have so many story books that vary in sizes so these shelves would work wonders for us! Thank you in advance if you find it in your heart to donate!
